He couldn’t stop laughing, when he heard I was planning to plunge into the forbidden forests of the Amazon, my friend Andrew rocked with laughter. “I’ll give you three precious tips,” he smirked. “Never put out a fire with your face. Never sit down with a bucket of ants. And finally, don’t ever go skinny dipping in a pool full of piranhas!” Then he just rolled over and roared hysterically.
I was glad he was not coming with me. I was dead serious to fulfill a boyhood dream. At the age of ten, I had been captivated by the story of Percy Fawcett, the British explorer. Fawcett had gone deep into the trackless Amazon jungles and come upon the ruins of a dead stone city. Its massive walls and deserted houses were choked with trailing vines.
Trees grew out of the windows. Except for the chatter of monkeys and choruses of birds, all was ghostly silent. Its guardians were savages who wielded blowpipes with poison darts. The discovery of the hilltop fortress and furnace came about, it seemed, by casual chance. My wife publishes a little community newspaper distributed in the counties bordering the Red River around Lake Texoma, called TGIF The Weekend Bandit. It is a general interest paper focusing mainly on local events and history. I write a weekly column on history and sometimes feature articles. Since I grew up near Rockwall, Texas, it was of great interest to me to discover that in January 2000 excavation of the mysterious buried wall there had finally been undertaken. Did you know that Ham or (guttural) Cham was a real person of history? The Syrians of today since the dawn of time still proudly call their nation the ‘Land of Cham’!
Maybe it’s hard to believe but it is a fact that Cham & sons & others, traveled by ship to many places in Asia, Africa, Europe, all over the world, which places he –as the fashion was in those days– proudly named after himself. Vietnam was also called the ‘Land of Cham’, right next to CAMbodia, also named after the Kambujadesa from India, after the very same ancient seafaring enigmatic personality! Who was he?
